Conservation & Climate Security International

C2Si works in post-conflict, transitional, and developing countries. Our initial focus is on the Islamic world, including North Africa, the Near East, Arabian Peninsula, Central & South Asia, and Indian Ocean countries.

Generalized map of the Islamic World

In an effort to address the immediate needs of their people, developing countries have often resorted to non-sustainable practices that degrade national resources and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. For instance, tropical deforestation and burning is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. When including these emissions, Indonesia ranks as the third most significant emitter of greenhouse gasses behind China and the United States.  Similarly, other Indian Ocean states, such as Malaysia and the Philippines will play an important part in contributing to the development of climate and conservation products due to heavy deforestation practices and important reserves of biodiversity and tropical forest products.

Many Islamic countries (our initial focus) have been largely ignored by the global environmental community, yet have rich and unique biodiversity that can provide significant environmental security and sustainably profitable resources. The Middle East alone is the fourth most important emitter of greenhouse gases, behind China, the United States, and the European Union.

These regions are crucial to geopolitical security and geoeconomic stability. The path to security and success is through scientific and technological solutions that need to be more effectively deployed in these regions. One of our fundamental goals is to contribute to security in the regions mentioned through scientific solutions to environmental problems, and to use such efforts to promote diplomacy and understanding between countries.

Finally, we have in-house expertise on the Islamic views of the natural world.

  • C2Si staff and management have spent significant time working in North Africa, Near East, Arabian Peninsula, Central & South Asia, and Indian Ocean countries in the environmental field, including in post-conflict countries.
  • We have successfully worked with the governments and people of many majority-Muslim nations.
  • We believe it is crucial to be sensitive and respectful to the cultural, social, and religious views of the people with whom we work.
